First off, do not get me wrong....I love my city, and I love my friends. There is a large problem here that I have noticed for a while. I realized it a long time ago, but had to actually see the problem in action to understand it.
This city's music scene sucks. Im sorry but its true. Im gonna catch shit for this but I have good a good basis for my argument.
DENVER, COLORADO.
The differences between Cleveland and Denver are amazing.
During my time in Denver, I felt part of a family. Everyone supports one another.
In Cleveland, everyone just "knows" eachother. But the scene is so shredded, its sad. The snobby indie kids that cant stand anyone else and have their noses so far in the air, clouds charge rent. Punk kids wont see the indie bands, hardcore kids wont see punk bands, and metal? Forget it! It bothers the shit out of me. If the kids/people in the Cleveland underground music scene expanded their horizons and opened their minds to new music, our scene would be sick! There are only 3 small great venues left and its impossible to pull a crowd because everyone is so goddamn stuck up. I like supporting my scene, and Ill go see my friends play everytime I can. If everyone just stopped worrying about themselves and started supporting the scene in this city..we would be back on the map.
NOW, in Denver its just the opposite. Kids/people arent linked into 1 genre. People support their scene. When I was there, we only had maybe 2 shows that didnt have at least 50 people there. Not only was it friends, but friends told friends and so on. The word in Denver spreads. You dont get that here. For the majority, the entire underground scene in Denver supports itself.
For instance, the DPUMS (Denver Post Underground Music Showcase). Has a ton of bands of 3 days in a bunch of different venues! Why dont we have that?????
I know why....because this city is so spread out. The Grog and Beachland are in the middle of nowhere, the only club downtown is the HOB, and good luck with that, and the Agora has gone to shit. Whats that leave us? Lakewood? The Hi/Fi, Syposium and Phantasy. Well, it used to have Undercurrents but that has apparently gone to shit. We need to bring this back, and get the Plain Dealer/Scene involved. We can turn this city's scene around!! We just need to band together!!
At least Now Thats Class and the Matinee are trying.
Too bad it wont happen. This city gains momentum and then falls on its face.
We are no different than Denver.
They have mountains, we have a lake.
They have great local bands, we have great local bands.
They have Waterworld, we have Cedar Point.
Cleveland needs to get out of this mind state that you can only support who you know.
If we all came together, we could get this city back to its glory, bands would get noticed and we could make a difference.
Whos with me?
